Join Sonica Veith in these fun, informative step-by-step demonstrations of making soaps and lotions. Homemade soaps and lotions made from pure, natural and nourishing ingredients are not only better for your health, they’re also less expensive than commercially prepared products. And, they’re fun to make!

In this series, Sonica shares her favourite soap and lotion recipes and demonstrates how to make facial soaps, a nourishing lotion that can also be used as a hair conditioner, and an easy-to-make laundry/dishwasher soap. Even if you’ve never tried soapmaking before, you’re sure to be inspired as Sonica demonstrates the beauty and simplicity of soap- and lotion-making.

Day 1: Soapmaking Introduction (22:00 minutes)

In this overview on soapmaking, Sonica Veith talks about the history of soap and its use through the ages. She also explains how soap works to prevent the spread of disease and compares commercial detergents and antibacterial agents with homemade soaps. Sonica shows the ingredients she uses for making soap and explains the necessary safety precautions for working with lye.

Day 2: Ivory Soap (25:00 minutes)

Join veteran soap-maker Sonica Veith for a fun and informative demonstration on soapmaking. Sonica defines some common soapmaking terms, shares favourite soap recipes and tips, and shows some artistic examples of beautiful soaps to make for yourself or to give as gifts. In this presentation, Sonica demonstrates step-by-step how to make Ivory Soap, a facial cleansing bar.

Day 3: Charcoal Facial Soap (26:00 minutes)

In this presentation, Sonica demonstrates how to make a layered, antibacterial charcoal facial soap that’s good for a variety of skin problems. She shows how to use a stick blender, how to make a flame pattern inside the soap and how to set up an insulator to begin curing the soap in its initial development phase. She also explains rebatching to recover soap that didn’t turn out and demonstrates how to use a simple, homemade soap cutting machine.

Day 4: Lotions and Lotion Bars (31:35 minutes)

Sonica Veith talks about the health risks posed by dangerous ingredients in skin care products and shares her own tragic story of a health crisis brought on by use of a commercial lotion. She provides a list of toxic ingredients to avoid that are commonly used in commercial skin care products and explains how emulsifiers work and the proper ratio of ingredients in making lotions. She also discusses natural preservatives and antioxidants and explains why freezing and refrigeration are good alternatives.

In easy-to-follow steps, Sonica demonstrates how to make Nourishing Lotion and Hair Conditioner and starts by showing how she prepares her own aloe vera juice from fresh aloe leaf.

As a bonus, there’s a demonstration of people trying out the soaps and lotion.  Does homemade soap lather as well as commercial products? See for yourself!

Day 5: Laundry/Dishwasher Soap (9 minutes)

Did you know you can make your own laundry and dishwasher soap? Sonica Veith shares her discovery of a homemade soap formula that works surprisingly well on both clothes and dishes. With easy-to-get ingredients and a simple process, Sonica demonstrates how to easily produce this versatile soap that is fun to make and will save you money.
