The Apostle Paul
When you think about the most prominent disciples, who do you think about? Most people probably think of Peter and Paul as being the two most efficient, convicted, and passionate disciples. Peter was certainly adored, but what about Paul? When learning about the early church, people oftentimes think of Peter and Paul. Their names sometimes go hand in hand, but these two men could not be more different. Unlike Peter, Paul was extremely educated and brought up in a prestigious manner. He was a Roman citizen of Hebrew descent and was likely taught multiple languages.
This well-equipped man seemed to have been born for the part. However, in order to relate and speak more appropriately to the Gentiles, Saul became Paul. Kameron DeVasher continues his Acts 101 series by discussing Saul’s conversation and the experiences he had before and after his baptism. How did Paul confound his audience? Paul originally started by persecuting Christians, so imagine the shock and awe of those who discover Paul ends up proclaiming Christ. The Jews that were once Saul’s closest companions soon become his most bitter enemies. They turn on him, they refuse to support him, and even plotted to end his life. He needed to escape in a basket! Despite all these difficulties, this divinely appointed man did not give up. Learn more about the challenging but fulfilling life of Paul from the book of Acts.

The First Jerusalem Council
All throughout history, people from different faiths encounter conflict. Consider the Jews during the First Jerusalem Council. Not only did these Jews conflict with the Gentiles, but they didn’t even get along with each other. Even if they were all believers, and even if they were all faithful, they still remained divided because of culturally influenced factions and divisions. If the Jews had disagreements and fights among themselves, how much more challenging would it have been to get along with the Gentiles? To add fuel to the fire, a greater number of Gentiles became Christ-followers than Jews. As more Gentiles came to know Christ, the Jews were understandably worried. What if they lost their cultural practices? Their traditions? What if the Gentiles took over?
Kameron DeVasher continues his Acts 101 series by studying the First Jerusalem Council. What happened between these two faithful groups? Hear about what a spirit-driven republic looks like, and how God used Peter to teach unity amongst the believers. The Lord used Peter to get through to these hard hearts, and God used His man to break through a wall of tradition, culture, and stubbornness. It takes great courage to preach the unpopular truth. It is easier to relent and agree with the majority. However, the Holy Spirit gives us the strength we need to overcome anything. Hear about the First Jerusalem Council and how God can speak to the most difficult and unwilling of souls.

The Second Jerusalem Council
What was the result of the Second Jerusalem Council? Paul and Barnabas went together and Paul preached on many contentious issues in the early church such as diet, idolatry, and circumcision. However, Paul spent quite a lot of time on the topic of circumcision. Why was this particular issue so important? After speaking about this topic at length, why does Paul go and circumcise Timothy? It does seem hypocritical. However, Kameron DeVasher’s final presentation in the Acts 101 series reveals how this incident is actually Paul’s approach to ministry.
In this lecture, discover the meaning behind “all things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful.” Paul has established that men can be circumcised, but they are not required to be. However, the question arose of should they be. Consider how Paul circumcised Timothy in order to aid the spread of the gospel to the Jews, not merely to follow a law. Sometimes with God, we do not have to, but we should. God wants us to work together for His ultimate glory. Consider whether we are supporting other Godly men and women and their work, or are we hindering God’s kingdom through our own hesitance and lack of support? Though we may not be required to by law to treat others a certain way, should we?
